First post on Dhoom 3

After making the biggest blockbuster sequel of the year - Dhoom II, Aditya Chopra (Adi) is all geared up for its third installment. Rumour has it, this will be the last one too to complete the trilogy (like Lord of Rings). With full hustle and bustle, Yash Raj House was preparing for a script when an unexpected fall out between the director of Dhoom - Sanjay Gadhvi & Adi happened. Though the real reason for fallout has not yet been revealed as both parties are showing ‘no comments’ attitude, its been said it was all about the renumeration hike by the director for the third installment.

Following hijack threats All airports put on high alert

Following hijack threats from some Kashmiri militant outfits all airports across the country has been put on high alert.

A Civil Aviation Ministry spokesperson said all airports have been on alert for the past four days due to the threat perception.

The sources said the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has instructed the CISF to upgrade security measures at the airports, including introducing additional checks and searches and enhancing the strength of personnel.

The BCAS decision came in the wake of intelligence inputs that some Kashmiri militant outfits were likely to target passenger aircraft and try to hijack one.

The spokesperson said the BCAS was periodically reviewing the threat perceptions and would maintain the high level of security till such perceptions died down.

All Indian airports have been on alert since the serial blasts on Mumbai suburban trains on July 11, 2007.

Battle for Hutch-Essar escalates as Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin in India

Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin arrived in India for The race for India's fourth largest mobile phone company Hutch Essar Ltd. He said his company was interested in buying whatever stake is available in India's mobile service provider Hutch Essar and will put a bid for it in the next few weeks.

He also
said he was also open to partner with Essar, which has 33 per cent stake in Hutch Essar and described Ruias as "good partners".

Sarin held talks with the Commerce minister Kamal Nath and Finance Minister P Chidambaram. During the meeting with Chidambaram, Sarin is understood to have discussed the British company's future plans in India, sources said.

Essar vice-chairman Ravi Ruia also held talks with Chidambaram. Essar group chairman Shashi Ruia had earlier this week said they were interested to buyout Hong Kong-based Hutchison Telecom's 67 per cent stake from the joint venture.

Vodafone has already started the due diligence of HEL, while bankers of Essar, which has 33 per cent stake in the joint venture company, are likely to initiate a similar process in a day or two.

Ahead of his scheduled meeting with Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin, who is bidding for Hutch-Essar, Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Wednesday said the government wanted good companies to enter the country.

Meanwhile, the board of Reliance Communications, a serious contender for Hutch-Essar, authorised its chairman Anil Ambani to pursue the acquisition, including raising long-term resources for the deal.

Hutchison Telecom is expected to complete the sale of its 67 per cent stake in the country's fourth largest telecom company, Hutchison Essar, before the Chinese New Year holiday, which begins February 17.

Hutchison Telecom had asked the interested companies to table their bids towards the end of this month before its board meeting, said one of the bidders.

Hutchison Telecom is believed to have set a floor price of $14 billion for its stake, but competition among the bidders is expected to raise the price.

While Vodafone will submit an independent bid, Reliance Communications, the Ruias and the Hindujas are expected to team up with financial institutions.

RBI to allow pure white-label ATMs

As the RBI allays ts apprehensions about pure white-label ATMs, banks and third-party service providers are now looking at setting up such ATMs.

With the RBI indicating that its apprehensions relating to the rollout of pure white-label ATMs — owned and operated by private companies and outsourced by banks — have been allayed, banks and third-party service providers are now looking at setting up such ATMs.

You may soon be able to withdraw money or carry out other transactions from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) right inside your residential complex or located at the bus stop across the road.

With the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) indicating that its apprehensions relating to the rollout of pure white-label ATMs — owned and operated by private companies and outsourced by banks — have been allayed, banks and third-party service providers are now looking at setting up such ATMs.

The new list of identified locations now includes residential complexes, hospitals, tourist locations, bus stops and railway stations.

The model being envisaged now would involve a bank or a consortium of banks looking after the settlement and cash management functions, while the service provider would invest in real estate, which is the ATM premises, the connectivity and the actual deployment of terminals.

Bengal govt releases status report on Singur

January 03, 2007 00:27 IST
The West Bengal Government on Tuesday released a status report on land acquisition at Singur for Tata Motors' small car factory in a bid to record transparency in the face of an Opposition sponsored movement.

The report was published five days after Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Banerjee called off her 25-day-long hunger strike which she started in protest against 'forced acquisition' of land from farmers.

Giving details of land acquisition, the status report said altogether 997.11 acres of land had been taken over in five mouzas of Singur in Hooghly district. It also specified the dates and gave break-ups of the amount of land acquired in different mouzas.

Out of a total amount of Rs 119 crore earmarked for giving compensation to the land-owners, Rs 83 crore had already been disbursed, the report said.

The Singur Krishi Jami Raksha Committee, a platform of 20 political organisations, led by Mamta Banejree had been alleging that the government had taken away about 400 acres out of the total acquired area without the consent of the owners. It demanded the land 'forcibly acquired' from the farmers restored them immediately.

However, denying persistently that any force was used in the land acquisition process, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had assured to release a status report to make public all details of taking over plots.

Warne touched by Sachin, Lara gesture

LONDON, Jan 1: Australian spin legend Shane Warne, who announced his retirement from international cricket recently, has said that he was overwhelmed by messages from two of his greatest opponents — India's Sachin Tendulkar and West Indies' Brian Lara.

"I have been overwhelmed by the personal messages of support from people in all walks of life. Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara, my two greatest opponents, have been in touch, along with John Howard (Aussie PM) and Russell Crowe (actor).

I've also had hundreds of notes from people I don't know but who say they have enjoyed watching me play cricket. Thank you," the Times quoted the spinner as saying.

Warne said that he had never planned such a long career in international cricket. Reminiscing his debut in international cricket, he said: "During our team New Year's Eve party last night, I couldn't help recalling the evening when I reckon my international career began.

"It was December 31, 1991, and I was sitting at the top of the old Sydney Park Royal Hotel working my way through a cooler of beer with Geoff Marsh and David Boon. Marsh turned to me and said: 'Mate, this is what playing for Australia is all about.'"

He added: "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that 15 years later I would still be in the business. It has been a wonderful, roller coaster ride. And now, as somebody used to sing, the end is near."

Ponting praises Buchanan’s input

Sydney: Australian captain Ricky Ponting has praised the work of coach John Buchanan for much of the team's success and believes his successor has an enormous role to fill.

While the headlines ahead of Tuesday's fifth Test against England have been dominated by the retirements of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer, Buchanan will also be the team coach for his last Test match.

Buchanan, 53, will stand down after the World Cup in the Caribbean in April and a search is underway for his replacement. Ponting's supportive comments come after leading England batsman Kevin Pietersen claimed the Australian coach was not respected by his own team.

Ponting said Buchanan and his support staff had long been overlooked but deserved to share the team's achievements. "They have to accept some of the accolades that come the team's way," he said on Monday.

"You look at the standard of cricket that we've been able to play over a long period of time. Just before John took over and certainly right through his stint as coach we've played some amazing cricket. Even this current run, we've won 11 matches on the trot."

Third bidder in Corus takeover battle!

NEW DELHI/LONDON: While the fight between Tata Steel and CSN over Anglo-Dutch steel maker Corus continues, experts feel there is still time for a third suitor to put in bids ahead of a deadline set by the regulators.

However, there is no obvious potential suitor on the horizon and whoever decides to make this move would have to act fast and launch an offer before mid-January.

Legal experts believe that the auction process could be announced a few days before the deadline of January 30 set by the UK Takeover Panel and any revised bid from the two suitors should come by the middle of January, so that the regulators find enough time to incorporate the prevailing situation in the terms and conditions of the auction process.

And this is the time by when a third bidder, if any, should announce its offer for Corus.

While a spokesperson for the takeover watchdog declined to comment, saying it was "hypothetical", a senior Takeover Panel official, who declined to be named, said that any new offer would be given due consideration as and when it emerges.

However, the emergence of a third bidder should not jeopardise the interests of shareholders that remains on top of the panel's agenda, he said, adding that a bidding war like situation is already continuing for more than three months.

Roy-Montague Jones, partner and joint head at UK-based international law firm Richards Butler told the media : "It is still possible in theory for a third bidder to emerge."

However, if there were to be a third party wishing to bid at this stage, it should aim to announce its offer not later than mid-January, which is around the same time when any revised offer should come from Tata Steel or CSN, Roy added.

Roy has been involved in advising various Indian and global companies on their merger and acquisition deals, while Richards Butler was advisor to one of the bidders in the takeover battle for an online auction firm QXL Ricardo Plc that itself went through an auction process in 2005.

"Any such bidder would certainly discuss the timetable for their bid with the Panel on a confidential basis before announcing it. But, if a new bidder wants to secure more time to formulate its offer, it is unlikely that the Panel would significantly extend the timetable now laid down," Roy said.

While the Takeover Code is intended to ensure that shareholders are not denied an opportunity to decide on the merits of a bid, it is also the case that a target company should not be hindered in conducting its business for longer than is reasonable by a bid, the lawyer said.

An offer from a third bidder by mid-January will allow time for its interest to be factored into the auction, which would be announced by the Panel in late January, he said.

However, if the third bidder were to wait until after the auction before making a move, tactically, this would be likely to be seen as being too late even if legal control of Corus would not pass until a later date, Roy cautioned.

However, there are no obvious potential suitors for Corus as of now. Even the industry's predator, Mittal Steel, is still involved in the integration process of Arcelor deal, while other potential suitors like Russia's Severstal have denied interest.

An Arcelor-Mittal spokesperson recently said the firm was watching Corus deal but was not interested in acquiring it.

There has been also speculation about Ruias-promoted Essar group mulling a bid for Corus, given the huge cash position they might build from the delisting of some of their group companies like Essar Teleholdings, Essar Shipping and US-listed BPO arm Aegis and a possible sale of its 33 per cent stake in telecom joint venture Hutch-Essar.

However, Essar is now reportedly eyeing the remaining 67 per cent stake held by its foreign partner Hutchison Telecom (HTIL) in Hutch-Essar, which is also being courted by world's largest mobile player Vodafone and Indian telecom giant Reliance Communications.

Tatas had made a revised bid of 4.7 billion pounds (500 pence a share) on December 10 for Corus, which was countered by CSN's 4.9 billion pound offer (515 pence a share) the very next day.

With none of the two bidders willing to withdraw from the battle, the UK Takeover Panel has asked them to submit their revised bids by January 30, while ruling that an auction process would be initiated if the competitive situation is not resolved "shortly before" this date.

Ashes: Flintoff guides England to 234-4

SYDNEY, Jan 2 (AP): Glenn McGrath took two wickets in five balls to give Australia's attack some impetus in his farewell Test before Andrew Flintoff revived the England innings with an unbeaten 42 on day one of the fifth Ashes match.

At stumps on Tuesday, England was 234 for four after Flintoff won the toss and elected to bat.

The England captain struck five boundaries and a big driven six over long-on off Stuart Clark after coming to the crease when England slipped from 166 for two to 167 for four.

At Tea: England 149/2 in 52 overs
At Lunch: England 58/1 in 17 overs

Paul Collingwood was unbeaten on 25 when bad light stopped play seven overs before the scheduled close on a rain-shortened first day.

With only the tailenders to come after the fifth-wicket pair, the pressure was on Flintoff to produce his biggest innings of the series if England had any hope of avoiding a 5-0 series whitewash by the Australians.

Flintoff was averaging only 22 as England slumped to four losses in the series and had only one 50, a meager return compared with his performances with bat and ball in England's 2-1 series upset in 2005.

He and Collingwood defied the Australian bowling for almost 1 1/2 hours, giving England slight honors on the first day of what will be the final Test match for two of cricket's greatest bowlers and 104-test veteran opener Justin Langer.

Shane Warne and McGrath, No. 1 and No. 3 on the list of all-time wicket takers in Test cricket, are quitting Test cricket after the Ashes.

McGrath had the only success of the departing Australian trio, who led the hosts onto the field in the morning after the start was delayed 70 minutes by rain.

Just when Ian Bell (71) and Kevin Pietersen (41) appeared to be getting on top of the Australian attack in a 108-run third-wicket stand, McGrath struck twice in consecutive overs to remove both batsmen.

The veteran paceman saw Pietersen stepping down the wicket at him, pitched one in short and the England No. 4 miscued to mid-wicket, where Mike Hussey took a diving catch.

Bell was out first ball of McGrath's next over, bowled between bat and pad, before Flintoff and Collingwood guided England to stumps with a 67-run partnership.

McGrath finished with 2-57 from 21 overs, while Brett Lee and Clark took one wicket apiece and Warne went for 59 runs from 19 overs on a pitch that offered little assistance to the spin bowlers.

The Australians took a wicket in each of the first two sessions, with Lee having Andrew Strauss (29) caught behind and Clark removing Alastair Cook (20) in the same mode from an inside edge without addition to the lunchtime total of 58 for one.

McGrath created chances in the morning session, having a loud shout for lbw against Strauss declined and a chance put down off the England opener at third slip, with Langer getting two hands onto a thick edge before putting it down.

But it took McGrath 20 overs for his breakthrough, and lifted his world record for a fast bowler to 559 wickets by stumps.

Australia is aiming to be only the second team to sweep a five-Test Ashes series, the first since Warwick Armstrong's side achieved it in 1920-21.

Jaffer, Karthick put india in command - India 254/3 on Day 1 End

CAPE TOWN, Jan 2: Wasim Jaffer scored his third Test century on Tuesday to lead India to 254 for three wickets on day one of the third and final Test against South Africa.

Jaffer's 116 took him past 1,000 test runs, but was ended when he edged the second new ball delivery from Dale Steyn to Jacques Kallis at second slip. It was Kallis' 100th catch in Tests, going alongside his 8,072 runs and 202 wickets.

Scorecard

He reached his century off the 19 balls and his innings lasted through lunch and tea, totaling exactly six hours, and contained 15 fours in a chanceless innings.

Sachin Tendulkar was on 28 at the close, together with V.V.S. Laxman on 4.

Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik built an opening partnership of 153, but Karthik was dismissed with the first ball after tea, giving debut-making left-arm spinner Paul Harris his first Test wicket.

Karthik was adjudged to have got an inside edge onto his pad and looped up a simple catch to Hashim Amla at short leg.

He had been dropped on 32 by Graeme Smith at first slip off the bowling of Shaun Pollock. A surprise choice as opener, Karthik withstood a short-pitched barrage from Jacques Kallis just before tea.

India captain Rahul Dravid won the toss and was the only other batsman to fall on a tough day for the bowlers. He was on 29 when he edged a lifting delivery from Pollock for wicketkeeper Mark Boucher to take an easy catch.

The three-match series is tied at 1-1 after India won the first Test by 123 runs and South Africa the second by 174 runs.

Harris worked hard, bowling 24 overs on his first day in Test cricket, and finished with 1-74. Pollock had 1-32, and Steyn took 1-41 in 20 overs.
